Learning Activity Description:

The International Maternal Emergency Conference (IMEC) is a multidisciplinary scientific meeting dedicated to improving the recognition, assessment, stabilization, and management of maternal emergencies.

The conference brings together experts in obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, critical care, cardiology, hematology, neurology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, rheumatology, anesthesia, and emergency medicine to address the most challenging conditions affecting pregnant and postpartum women.

Through evidence-based lectures, expert panel discussions, case-based learning, and interactive workshops, participants will explore contemporary approaches to maternal critical illness, including cardiovascular emergencies, sepsis, hemorrhage, coagulopathy, neurological crises, respiratory failure, endocrine emergencies, and maternal collapse. Special emphasis will be placed on early recognition, multidisciplinary teamwork, rapid escalation pathways, protocol-driven management, and strategies to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.

The conference aims to equip healthcare professionals with practical knowledge and clinical skills that can be immediately translated into everyday practice to improve maternal outcomes and patient safety.

Scientific Committee:

Learning Activity Objectives:
By the end of this symposium, participants will be able to:

- Recognize early warning signs and clinical indicators of maternal deterioration during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
- Apply evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular emergencies, including peripartum cardiomyopathy, hypertensive crises, pulmonary embolism, and maternal cardiac arrest.
- Discuss current strategies for managing critical care conditions in obstetric patients, including shock, respiratory failure, ICU admission, and sepsis.
- Evaluate and manage hematologic emergencies in pregnancy, including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), anticoagulation challenges, and sickle cell crises.
- Identify neurological emergencies affecting pregnant patients and implement appropriate stabilization and referral pathways.
- Develop management plans for endocrine and rheumatological emergencies, including diabetic ketoacidosis, thyroid storm, and systemic lupus erythematosus flares.
- Apply principles of obstetric resuscitation, massive transfusion protocols, and team-based emergency response systems.
- Demonstrate understanding of maternal collapse management, including modified ACLS in pregnancy and indications for perimortem cesarean delivery.
- Strengthen interdisciplinary communication and collaboration during high-acuity maternal emergencies.
- Integrate clinical protocols and maternal safety initiatives into routine practice to improve patient outcomes and reduce preventable maternal morbidity and mortality.

Learning Outcome:

Upon successful completion of this symposium, participants will be able to:

- Describe the pathophysiology, presentation, and management of common and life-threatening maternal emergencies.

- Explain current evidence-based recommendations for critical care management in obstetric patients.

- Identify appropriate escalation pathways and referral criteria for critically ill pregnant and postpartum women.

- understand systematic assessment of deteriorating obstetric patients using maternal early warning systems.

- Implement emergency management algorithms for sepsis, hemorrhage, shock, thromboembolism, cardiac arrest, and maternal collapse.

- Apply principles of multidisciplinary crisis resource management and team communication during obstetric emergencies.

- Utilize obstetric resuscitation and massive transfusion protocols appropriately in simulated and clinical scenarios.

- Lead or actively contribute to coordinated multidisciplinary responses during maternal emergencies.

- Incorporate maternal safety protocols into clinical practice to improve timely recognition and intervention.

- Enhance preparedness for rare but catastrophic obstetric events through structured, protocol-driven decision-making.

- Promote quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality within healthcare organizations.
