Laura Godfrey Hendon, MA, MS, CGC
Laura is a Certified Genetic Counselor and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and OB-Gyn at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Laura specializes in perinatal genetic counseling and counsels high-risk pregnancies at the University Center for Fetal Medicine. She established first trimester screening, non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS), and prenatal chromosomal microarray at UMMC.
Laura received a Master of Arts in Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis in Molecular Genetics and Genomics from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2007 and a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in 2011.
Laura is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and is an active member of the Prenatal Special Interest Group. She serves on numerous committees and working groups for her National Society, including NSGCares and the Abstract Working Group. She is an active mentor with NSGConnect, mentoring junior genetic counselors.
Laura is the Jackson site genetic counselor for the SouthSeq whole genome sequencing study (a Clinical Sequencing Evidence Generating Research study) which evaluates Mississippi newborns with congenital anomalies.
Laura is the Clinical Genetics Education Director at UMMC, coordinating genetic education efforts for medical learners at all levels and she actively lectures at the local, state, and regional level about various perinatal genetic topics. Laura has been an author on 6 peer-reviewed publications and numerous abstracts.
